KOBE, Japan: The 2026 SynCell Asia Workshop successfully wrapped up on Saturday, July 4, at the RIKEN Kobe Campus, concluding two full days of intensive cross-border academic exchange. The event brought together leading synthetic cell scientists from six Asian countries to align implementation plans for the landmark 10-year synthetic cell roadmap published in Nature Biotechnology this May.

Hosted by the RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (BDR), the workshop marked the third annual flagship conference of the pan-Asian SynCell Asia Initiative, featuring principal investigators from China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Malaysia.

The two-day agenda was organized into seven thematic sessions grouped by regional delegations, with each presentation followed by live Q&A. Dr. Yoshihiro Shimizu of RIKEN delivered opening remarks on Friday, setting the stage for cross-nation knowledge sharing. The sessions covered a broad spectrum of synthetic cell research, including cell-free expression platforms, membrane engineering, DNA regulatory circuits, standardized assembly pipelines, biofoundry infrastructure, and organelle reconstruction, showcasing the diverse expertise across Asia.

A 60-minute panel discussion, themed "Roadmap and Future Plans for SynCell Asia," served as one of the core objective of this year’s Kobe gathering. Four representatives from China, Japan, Korea, and Singapore opened the session by presenting the current status and strategic approaches of their respective countries in synthetic cell research, drawing upon the commentary recently published in Nature Biotechnology. The presentations highlighted both the distinct strengths and shared challenges across the region, ranging from infrastructure development to funding landscapes and technical priorities. Building on these national overviews, the panel then turned to substantive discussions on potential collaborative topics and mechanisms.

Dr. Norikazu Ichihashi of the University of Tokyo delivered closing remarks, summarizing the key agreements reached and outlining a clear timeline for follow-up cross-lab joint experiments, with initial pilot collaborations expected to commence later this year.
